GDE® electrode

As an alternative to conventional cathode which generate hydrogen gas, when a gas diffusion electrode GDE® of an oxygen raw material is used in a brine electrolysis process, a great voltage reduction can be expected, therefore, we are moving towards commercialization of the GDE.

GDE® electrode is a registered trademark of De Nora Permelec Techno Service Ltd, and is an electrode which consists of a porous base material and catalyst structure, where numerous three phase boundaries are formed which contact the gas, electrolytic solution and catalyst simultaneously.

Since 1993, the Japan Soda Industry Association has been leading the research of a brine electrolysis process, which uses a gas diffusion electrode where the hydrogen generating reaction was substituted with an oxygen reduction reaction.

While several types of electrolysis systems have been proposed, a dual chamber method which does not require sections for a caustic soda chamber and oxygen gas chamber, is attracting attention due to easy construction of large-scale cell.

Oxygen gas diffusion electrodes are utilized in the electrolytic synthesis processes with chlorine gas, where waste hydro chloric acid is used as a raw material, in overseas plants. The GDE® electrode is also expected to be utilized in metal-air secondary batteries.
