Diamond Electrode

The water electrolysis activity of platinum and the DSE® are too high, and there is no high oxidation ability required for composition and decomposition of substances other than oxygen. Although electrodes, such as lead oxide, titanium oxide and tin oxide have high oxidation ability, there are the disadvantages of poor stability and toxicity. Diamonds which are excellent in chemical stability cannot be used as an electrode as electric current does not flow through them; however, by including nitrogen and boron, electrical conductivity is generated. Diamond electrodes are made of conductive diamonds formed on base materials, such as silicon, niobium, carbon and etc. by a CVD method. It has been confirmed that diamond electrodes operate stably in a broad potential window, which could not be acquired with conventional electrodes due to the chemical stability, particularly in high potential windows. Applications for various types of reactions (ozone water production, fluorine gas production, waste water treatment and etc.) where high efficiency was difficult with conventional electrodes has been reported.
